✦ Synopsis
In the range of small scattering angles the substrate quasi-single-scattering peak, as well as a recoil peak, show a fine structure if the cold metal surface is covered by a thin film of condensed gases. It is postulated that such an effect is connected with a multiple scattering of projectiles and recoils inside the condensed film. Multiple scattering direct the ions to the detector after single scattering from the substrate atom over the angles larger or smaller than the detection angle. Based on the dependences of energy positions of the substrate peak components on the noble gas pressure in the environment of the target, it is possible to estimate the mean parameters of the condensed film (thickness or density) as well as to determine a cleanliness of the target surface.
