✦ Synopsis

A single crystal of chromium doped SrLaGaO, has been grown by the Czochralski method. The Cr3' sites have been indentified on the basis of time-resolved luminescence spectra and luminescence decay curves recorded in the 5-300 K If temperature region. One Cr.

site in CrO, octahedra distorted by random distribution of Sr'+ and La"+ ions over sites with '+ C,, symmetry is indicated by structural investigations. Instead, three distinct sites of Cr-ions situated in the low, medium and high crystal field occur in the lattice of SrLaGaO,.

It is shown to be possible to identify dominant modes of radiationless relaxation of ions in crystals by comparing photoacoustic spectra with fluorescence excitation spectra. The dominant decay mode for Cr3\* in MgO is shown to be quite different from that found in ruby. Photoacoustic spectroscopy (
