β¦ Synopsis
This investigation is a continuation of previous studies made on the complexing behavior of caffeine with numerous pharmaceuticals. By means of solubility analysis it is shown that one-to-one complexes are formed between the xanthine and the pharmaceuticals listed under the title. T h e barbiturates appear to form both one-to-one and two-to-one complexes. The stability constants of the several complexes have also been estimated.
N EARLIER PUBLICATIONS from these laboratories incontrovertible evidence of complex formation between caffeine and a number of pharmaceutical acids, esters, and salts was presented (1-3). It was shown that these complexes were distinct molecular species capable of existing in both liquid and solid phase in fixed molecular proportions. The preseri&communication is concerned with further ext-ion of these caffeine mmplexing studies to @rtain aromatic and nonaromatic nitrogenous compounds. Data are presented for complexes formed between caffeine sulfathiazole, sulfadiazine, 9-aminobenzoic acid, benzocaine, phenobarbital, and barbital.
