✦ Synopsis
The retention behaviors of quinolones in PRP-1 columns were investigated using quantitative structure ᎐retention relationships. The influence of the Ž . variables such as organic modifiers MeOH, THF and pH was also studied. At pH 3, log k X was mainly affected by two descriptors, HOMO energy or dipole Ž . moment calculated by molecular mechanisms MMq and the AM1 semiempirical method. These descriptors were explained bycharge transfer interaction between solutes and stationary phase. On the other hand, log k X at pH 11 was affected by other descriptors, hydrogen bonding donor ability and standard deviation of negative atomic charge. The selected descriptors were explained by the interaction between solutes and mobile phase.
