✦ Synopsis

The hardening process of cement containing 0.65 wt.% sulfide was investigated. It was found that a part of the sulfide is oxidized to sulfate during hydration. The sulfide oxidation increases with increasing hydration temperature and continues after stopping the hydration reaction and storing the samples in oxygen and nitrogen atmosphere, respectively. E.s.r. and MSssbauer investigations turned out that in addition to oxygen the internal cement components Fe(III) and Mn(III) act as oxidizing agents being reduced to Fe(II) and Mn(II), respectively. The Mn(II) ions are incorporated into Ca lattice sites of Ca(OH)2 formed during the hydration.

The theory for the steady state current-potential and the impedance-potential response for two parallel redox reaction has been calculated. The results are used to assess measurements of the hydrogen evolution reaction on nickel from acid solution in the presence of ceric or ferric ions. c,
