The effect of fluonde Ions on the electrochenucal behavlour of a zmxxuum metal electrode was investigated Since zmxxnum metal IS always covered by a layer of oxide, the anod~c charactenstlc of a Zr/ZrO, electrode depends highly on the electrolyte composition Only m hydrochlonc and perchlonc acid media was a direct proportronahty between fluonde concentration and anod~c current density found In other electrolytes the fluonde Ion-induced dlssolutlon of the zmxxuum metal leads to an Increase m ZrO, film thxkness, and as a consequence, the mass transport of fluonde through the oxide layer 1s hindered The mechamsm of the zmxmmm electrode dlssolutlon at low concentrations of fluonde (below 1 X 1O-3 M) seems to be different from that at high concentrations The dependence of the equlhbrmm potential on the fluonde concentration IS far from the Nemstlan one, and a zmxxuum electrode could be successfully applied m the potentlometnc mode of operation only as an indicator electrode m titrations The proportlonahty between the anodlc current density and the fluonde ion concentration m perchlonc acid media could be exploited for the amperometnc detection of fluonde With a thm-layer cell and a wconuun metal based indicator electrode, nanogram amounts of fluonde could be detected by a smple flow mJectlon system
