โœฆ Synopsis

dealing with the simulation of climatic influences on crop production, using rice as the example. The methodology and approach used by the authors is gaining wide approval in climate--crop modeling research around the world. Other papers reported under this subdivision deal with a statistical approach to hemispheric climate changes. Still others use a combination of statistical-dynamical inputs in the modeling effort. Much of the modeling is directed toward hemisphere temperature prediction with considerable attention given to the regional aspects.

The concluding remarks of the symposium are short and rather incomplete. Apparently everyone wanted to go home.

By way of critical comment several authors apply rather elaborate methods of statistical and mathematical procedures to rather scanty data sets. This reviewer questions the use of some of the analysis procedures presented in this volume. It is most difficult to correct data deficiencies by further assumptions and analysis procedures. This is particularly true when dealing with biological responses to the physical environment.
