Each Associate Editor has written a commentary on the paper he has invited to present to us in this special issue. Each Associate Editor tells us something about the work selected. Because there are so many fine scholars working today, I know these were hard choices for each Associate Editor to make.
No meaning should be given to the order of presentation of the five papers and their introductions. In ordering the papers, I have recognized the seniority of the Associate Editors and so the order is, first, the paper written by Ranjay Gulati, 'Alliances and networks,' chosen by Ed Zajac. Then follows the paper by W. Chan Kim and Rene Β΄e Mauborgne, entitled, 'Procedural justice, strategic decision making, and the knowledge economy,' chosen by Karel Cool. Associate Editor Rich Bettis' choice was written by Jeffrey L. Sampler, 'Refining industry structure for the information age.' John McGee has chosen Alan M. Rugman's and Alain Verbeke's paper, 'Cor-
