In 1992, the American Cancer Society convened its first national conference devoted entirely to aspects of prostate cancer. In 1994, a second conference was held dealing again with the broad topic. A good deal of progress has been noted in the intervening 2 years. New information regarding the causation of prostate cancer and likely factors in its pathogenesis are contained in the conference proceedings. Additional information and benefit to patients are found in the diagnostic approaches and the use of serum markers. Data from prostate cancer early detection projects from a variety of programs are also presented, including proof of early stage detection amenable to treatment. The modifications in hormonal management as well as primary therapy have been updated in comprehensive reviews. Clinical trials that are underway in the United States and elsewhere are also presented. The quality-of-life issues remain a matter of widespread concern for the public, the patient, and the medical profession. Important contributions for discussion and evaluation of these issues have also been included. Fundamental research involving all aspects of prostate cancer was an important part of this conference as well as the first. Review of the reports of this endeavor will likely benefit all.
