This commemorative section of The Career Development Quarterly offers readers a brief glimpse into the lives of two extraordinary persons who passed away in 2008, John Holland and Kenneth B. Hoyt. Both made contributions to career development that have changed the course of the field. In essence, their work represents two influential strands that blend in significant ways. John Holland's influence on career theory and practice is, and will continue to be, substantial and unique. All counseling students and career practitioners learn about his theory early in their careers and often spend the rest of their careers applying or researching the theory that Holland contributed. Many times, Holland's theory is implemented within the context of career education initiatives-the unparalleled champion of which is Kenneth B. Hoyt. Hoyt was a tireless advocate for the need to infuse career education in the school curriculum to help students connect school and work in ways that foster educational and career plans that, in turn, help young people develop their capacity to become successful students and workers. Each day, the work of school counselors is influenced by Hoyt's contributions.
