✦ Synopsis

We must therefore try to explain the shell model starting from strong, short range interaction between nucleons. By shell model I mean the assigning of individual quantum numbers to 6ach nucleon. This task is certainly increased hi difficulty by the type of two-nucleon potential which we have to assume in the light of recent evidence on high energy nuclear collisions. That potential has a repulsive core followed by an extremely strong attractive region and a rather short range for the attraction as well. This kind *) See p. 1161 of this VolumE.

A size-consistent set of equations for electron correlation which are limited to double substitutions, based on Brueekner orbitals, is discussed. Called BD theory, it is shown that at fifth order of perturbation theory, BD incorporates more terms than CCSD and QCISD. The simplicity of the equations

The Brueckner model, which is a version of coupled-cluster theory where orbitals are optimized to yield zero single-excitation amplitudes (T,=O), naturally leads to the definition of an effective one-particle Hamiltonian F (or Brueckner Hamiltonian) which effectively accounts for correlation effects
