✦ Synopsis
Informal Mass Spectrometry Conference, organized by Karoly Vekey and Pietro Traldi, was held at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest on 4±6 May 1998. The success of this conference was based on the quality of the papers presented by participants from Eastern and Western Europe and from North America, and by the informal atmosphere which facilitated discussions amongst colleagues who have not often had the opportunity to meet in the past. This degree of informality was, however, made possible only through the sterling efforts of the two organizers and their colleagues from Budapest. It is also appropriate to acknowledge the ef®ciency and kindness of the young people who worked so hard to ensure the success of the conference and to provide such a warm welcome to participants from outside Hungary:
