Peter Bamfield has made the commendable attempt to straighten out somewhat the complexity of research and development (R&D) management and to outline this briefly. This is certainly no easy task, for precisely in this field it is not long before "old truths" are replaced by new ones. The author knows what he is writing about, however, because he is experienced in this business himself. For many years he worked for ICI and Zeneca, where he was responsible for R&D management. Peter Bamfield knows too, though, that about 50% of all chemists will be involved with R&D management themselves sooner or later during their professional life, while never hearing anything about it during their academic training.
