Such a review will serve both to provide a detailed description and justification for the model IIC that was to be demonstrated and to describe the mindset of the authors as they began the demonstration project. These two sets of articles provide an interesting and, we trust, useful case study of the dynamics of information system development in today's dynamic academic environments.

The first four articles in this Perspectives describe the implementation and operation of the IIC. Shaughnessy and Adams lay the groundwork by describing the information environment at the University of Minnesota within which the IIC was planned and by describing the proposed design of the IIC. Beath et al. analyze the problems that were encountered and issues that arose during the implementation process.
