✦ Synopsis

It is a pleasure to introduce Tom Jedrey, our Guest Editor for this special issue on the ACTS programme. It is very timely around one year after launch, to produce a compact edition outlining the preliminary results from this programme. Some would say that ACTS marks a crossroads to a new generation of satellite communication systems and opens up both high data rate as well as lower rate mobile opportunities.

The hot topic in satellite communications at the moment is the use of satellites in the Global Information Infrastructure (GII) and in this respect ACTS provides us with some early experimental results and experiences. The other hot topic is in mobile and personal communications and its transition from speech only to multimedia services. Again the ACTS programme is at the Fbrefront with early experiences. Tom has been, and is, very much at the heart of the ACTS programme from the NASA JPL end, and I am very pleased to have him aboard in charge of this special issue.
