✦ Synopsis

Intrinsic optical losses of GeO

-P O -Al O glasses consid-2 2 5 2 3 ered as potential materials for low-loss optical fibers have been ( ) investigated. Rayleigh scattering at 488 nm wavelength and infrared absorption tailing of GeO -P O -Al O glasses were 2 2 5 2 3 measured using silica glass as a standard. Rayleigh scattering losses of 10-20 mol% P O -GeO glasses were as low as those of 2 5 2 pure GeO glass. Addition of 1-2 mol% Al O improves the 2 2 3 stability against crystallization and chemical durability with a slight increase of Rayleigh scattering. The minimum loss of GeO 2 glasses containing below 20 mol% P O is estimated to be 3 = 2 5 10 y2 -1 = 10 y1 dB / km, which is between the values of si-( y1 ) ( y 2 ) lica glass ; 10 dB / km and GeO glass 3 = 10 dB / km . 2 ᮊ 1997 Academic Press 2 5 2 which corresponds to the eutectic composition of the SiO ᎐P O system.
