✦ Synopsis


Vibrational energy relasation has been measured at Hz bath gas pressures from 1 lo 65000 Torr at 298 K in the competitive channel decomposition of 3-methyl-3-hexyl radicals chemically activated to ~44 kcal mol-I. Decomposition of the initially formed, internally non-randomized ndiuls occurs on a picosecond time scale to produce 2-methyl-1-pentene. Formation of 2-methyl-l-butene is also possible after internal energy relasation has occurred. The presence Of the 3-methyl _group at the site of excitation appears to increase the relasation rate (8 X 1O'2 s -')_ Comparisons rare made with previous studies to help establish the size of the initially excited subset ofvrbrationsl modes.
