CH-stretching overtone spectra of 3-methylpentane are measured for both liquid and low temperature (77 K) solid phases. A local-mode analysis is used to extract the diagonal local-mode anharmonicity constant. The results show that the local vibrational potential is more harmonic at high viscosity.

β¦ Synopsis
CHstretcbing overtone spectra of 2,2+iimetbyIbutane, 2,3xlimetbyIbutane, and 2,2,3,3-te*%ametbyIbutane are rnezwxed uld their local mode features discussed. The derived local mode parameters, along with those previously obtained for 2-methyIbutane and butane. show that the local CHstre?cbing viirational potential for CHa hydrogens becomes more harmonic with increased methyl group steric crowding.
