✦ Synopsis

fkenty-five patients with prostatic cancer were prospectively examined with a prototype endorectal sur- face coil featuring a birdcage resonator circuit design. The purpose was to determine tht safety of an intracavitarg probe for magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the pelvis that out" characteristics of a volume coil design and allows high-resolution M R imaging of the proatate and potentially servm as an altracllviteuy surface coils. Clinically useful images supplementing images obtained with the body or external surface coils were obtained with the prototype probe. It was tolerated by all patients enrolled in the study. and none experienced side effects. The cylindrically symmetric sensitivity profile of the probe allowed identification of prostate tumora and pelvic lymph node and bone metastases. Volume-type coils may improve endopelvic M R imaging when used alone or in combination with external coil systems.

The dependence of rotating frame spin-lattice relaxation, T1 rho on locking field frequency, f1, was measured for phantom materials and human breast tissues. These data were used to predict the relative signal strengths obtainable in a spin-locking imaging sequence. This imaging sequence was impleme

Finally, I think it would be important for the readers to understand why the authors decided to use cascaded (corporate-type) two-way sectorial structures to obtain the desired four-way combiner. The challenge of any comprehensive work on MRI is to be able to appeal to both basic scientists and clinicians. Applications of Magnetic Resonance to the Study of the Lung, edited by Anthony Cutillo, achieves this goal. Within its pages the subjects range widely, from basic MRI principles to fractal
