On December 7, 2007, BioEssays went to Princeton University to interview the distinguished molecular biologist and President of Princeton, Dr Shirley Tilghman. The following is an edited transcript of that interview.

BioEssays: Dr Tilghman, I wonder if we could begin with your early years. You are a native of Toronto, Canada, and you were an undergraduate at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, where you majored in chemistry and biochemistry. Can you tell us about the roots of your early interest in science-do they go back to childhoold?
