✦ Synopsis

The taxonomy of the genus Elaeis is reviewed. E. guineensis and E. oleifera were found to hybridize. Interspecific barriers were only partially developed as was evident from reduced seed set in the interspecific cross and occasional incomplete pairing of chromosomes in the F1 hybrids. However vigorous F1 hybrids were obtained and the scope for interspecific breeding work is promising.
