✦ Synopsis

A transient intersexuality in male embryos of certain species of birds has been reported. The species in which this coiiditioii has been observed include the fowl (Laulani6, 1886), English sparrow (Witsclii, '35), blackbird (Arnsel) and pheasant (Unger, '36, '37)' hawks (Stanley, '37) and ring doves (Riddle and Duiiham, '42). This aiiomaly involves a temporary development of ovarian cortex on the left testes, but usually not on the right testes, of genetic male hormones. The purposes of the present study was to learn whether this type of intersexuality exists in the pigeon, arid also to compare the conditions found in normal breeds of pigeons with those existing in a special strain of hermaphroditeproducing pigeons. Tlie existence of a strain of the latter type was briefly reported by Riddle, Dunham and Schooley ( '42), arid completed studies on this race were published clsewhei*e (Xiddle, Hollander aiid Scliooley, '43 ; Riddle, '45).
