DNA is found in two different parts of the human cell. It is found in the nucleus and in the mitochondria.

Mitochondrial DNA analysis in casework

The FSS has been analysing mtDNA in Forensic Casework since 1992. The first cases were concerned with identification of human remains. A criminal casework unit opened in Birmingham in October 1994. A second unit opened in London in January 1998. To date mtDNA has been analysed in some 150 cases.
