✦ Synopsis
Abstract
A modified mesenteric caval shunt using a Teflon ‘H’ prosthesis has been performed in 4 poor-risk patients with cirrhosis and exsanguinating haemorrhage from oesophageal varices and a fifth patient with portal vein thrombosis. Although 2 patients ultimately died, the procedure was effective in arresting the haemorrhage and is technically simple to perform.
