Specificity was rather disappointing (66.3%) at the conventional threshold (23/24), as well as positive predictive value (32.7%). A lower threshold (2

β¦ Synopsis
The Italian version of the Geriatric Mental State Examination (GMS) was tested for interrater agreement (interobserver). Thirty geriatric patients from psychiatry, neurology and general medical facilities were interviewed by four raters. The mean values of kappa and phi for the analysable items were 0.80 and 0.81. 'Organic' and 'functional' items produced very similar coefficient values.

Recent research concerned with the collection of prevalence data on the various psychiatric disorders has tended to use semistructured clinical interviews. Some of these, like the Present State Examination (PSE) (Wing et al., 1974), the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS) (Robins et nl., 1981) and the Geriatric Mental State Examination (GMS) (Copeland et al., 1976), are also able to generate a diagnosis or to determine case level according to computerized algorithms such as the CATEGO (Wing and Sturt, 1978) for PSE and the AGECAT (Copeland et al., 1986) for the GMS.
