La ben guanyada fama de Manuel de Pedrolo com a novel·lista potser ha fet oblidar que és també un excel·lent autor de contes i narracions breus. De fet, les seves primeres provatures en prosa s’iniciaren en aquest gènere: així, «El premi literari i més coses», publicat l’any 1953, recollia contes escrits entre 1938 i 1951. Durant els anys cinquanta alternà la seva febril activitat novel·lística amb la de contista i va escriure els reculls «L’interior és el final», «Domicili provisional», «El temps a les venes», «Un món per a tothom», «Cinc cordes», «Violació de límits», «International setting», «Crèdits humans»…
Una de les constants de la narrativa pedroliana és la seva ambientació cosmopolita, com s’endevina en el mateix títol del present reculi: «escenari internacional». No és, però, un estratagema per defugir la realitat més immediata, sinó més aviat l’intent d’interessar-se per uns sentiments i unes passions, uns comportaments i unes situacions que, en el món d’avui, s’han fet més universals que mai.
