✦ Synopsis

IPTrCCD was launched in March 1990 under an agreement between the International Fund for Agricultural Research (WAR) and the International Board for Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR), with IFAR acting as the host organization. The need for such a program had been highlighted in the period 1988-89 during a project of WAR, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, to synthesize information on tropical forests and their crop genetic resources. A program proposal had been developed in 1989 and circulated to a large number of experts for comments and peer review. These reviewers were overwhelmingly in support of such a program to fill a major gap existing in current international conservation activities and because action on useful woody species of the tropics and subtropics tend to fall between the vested interests of the agricultural, forestry and nature conservation sectors.

In March 1990 a group of experts was convened to agree on priorities for action. By considering a number of criteria based on knowledge of genepool diversity and conservation, degree of exploitation and potential for enhanced utilization,
