Abstract

Broadcast meteorology has undergone a rapid expansion in the past few years and the profession of β€˜Broadcast Meteorologist’ is now seen as a serious branch of meteorology. This paper explains how weather forecasts have evolved on television, focusing mainly on the BBC where the author was Director of the BBC Weather Centre for many years. The International Association of Broadcast Meteorology (IABM) has been established to promote weather broadcasting standards across the world and the foundation of this organization is discussed.
