Coefficients of expansion and int\_\_ernal pressures (P3 have been measured for samples of poly(ethylene oxide) of molecular weight (M,) 2000, 6000 and 20000. The values of P~ found for the solids (P~ < l0 s Pa, 10 Β°) are low compared to those found for the liquids (P~ = 5 x 10 s Pa, 70Β°).

β¦ Synopsis
Abstraet~lnternal pressures (PD have been measured at low external pressure for solid poly(ethylene oxide) 6000 and solid poly(ethylene oxide) 6000 swollen with 5.Β°/> by weight liquid poly(ethylene oxide) 200. Values of Pi are low (Pi < 10 s Pa at 10'). The effect of swelling with liquid, which is located exclusively within the disordered layers of the solid, is that expected on the basis of additivity.
