✦ Synopsis

Abstract

An internal patch antenna integrated with an inset shielding metal case for application in a mobile device is presented. The internal patch antenna is achieved by mounting a top radiating patch above the system ground plane of a mobile device and further short‐circuiting the top radiating patch to a shielding metal case, which is mounted on the system ground plane and inset into the region below the top patch. Since the shielding metal case provides a coupling‐free space for the RF modules/circuitry and other associated components, the proposed design leads to a compact integration of the internal antenna and the associated components in the mobile device. Details of the proposed design applied to a mobile device for UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems, 1920–2170 MHz) operation are described, and the experimental results are presented and discussed. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ## Abstract This letter presents a novel shorted patch antenna for applications as internal mobile handset antennas. Instead of a conventional simple ground plane, the proposed antenna uses an L‐shaped ground plane, which effectively decreases the antenna's backward radiation and enhances the anten
