โฆ Synopsis
In layered structures a longitudinal temperature gradient or a transverse electric current in a longitudinal magnetic field can give rise to internal currents. Due to the Peltier effect, these currents give a convective contribution to the thermal conductivity or produce a temperature gradient in the direction normal both to the current and to the magnetic field (in the geometry of the Ettingshausen effect). Circular currents in the coordinate-energy space can arise in quantum wells due to different responses of carriers of different subbands to a longitudinal temperature gradient.
