Abstract

Internal controls are not just the concern of auditors. Over the past two decades, a series of financial frauds elevated the importance and scope of internal controlsโ€”especially for management.

Managers struggling to improve internal controls, however, should see them as more than just an intricate maze or a headache. Internal controls can benefit management in several ways.

But there are obstacles to making substantial improvements to internal controlsโ€”even if management is convinced that is needed. And the obstacles are bigger for smaller companies, or when resources are limited due to the economy, lean budgets, and so forth. So what can management do?
