✦ Synopsis
Measurements of X-ray diffraction (XRD), resistivity (rðTÞ), magnetic susceptibility (wðTÞ) and magnetization (sðm 0 HÞ) are reported for the polycrystalline CeðPt 1Àx Ir x Þ 2 Si 2 alloy system. The unit cell volume derived from the XRD results deviates from Vegard's rule around x ¼ 0:220:3. wðTÞ measurements show a Curie-Weiss behaviour at high temperatures for the x ¼ 0, 0.1 and 0.2 alloys whereas the alloys with xZ0:4 exhibit broad maxima in wðTÞ at intermediate temperature (e.g. at 170 K for x ¼ 0:4). The latter behaviour due to valence fluctuations as described by Sales and Wohlleben. rðTÞ data indicate Kondo lattice behaviour for xr0:2 and fluctuating valency for xZ0:3. sðm 0 HÞ data indicate metamagnetic behaviour for the x ¼ 0:4 alloy.
