✦ Synopsis

Exact quantum-mechanical calculations of the dissociation dynamics of Nat excited by a femtosecond pulse are carried out using an iteration scheme for computing the wavepacket dynamics in multiphoton processes. The results show that nonadiabatitally ramified packets interfere with each other at the crossing pomt between the covalent and ionic potentials. The interference makes the dissociation probability much larger or smaller than the value estimated in its absence. The dependence of the dissociation probability on the pulse length and wavelength originates from the diverse aspects of packet interference.
