✦ Synopsis


The interface structure and magneto-optical properties of Co/Pt multilayers were studied. An unusual increase of the Kerr rotation with increasing Pt thickness was found for a Pt thickness less than 0.72 nm. Through small-and large-angle X-ray diffraction analyses, we suggest that this enhancement of Kerr rotation may be due to the intermixing of Pt and Co atoms at the interface, which causes a larger population of the polarized Pt spins in the system.
