The present status of the field of digital computer based industrial control systems is reviewed with special attention to those parts of the system other than the computer itself. Some predictions as of 1975 are presented.
Summary--This survey reviews the major problems which exist today in the development of transducers, input-output equipment, and computer systems for on-line process control in various industries. It outlines the areas requiring attention through applied research and development and points out some of the gains to be made through solution of these problems. The similarity of applications and of the problems across the various industries is highlighted in an attempt to influence an industry-wide attack on these problems.
