Abstract

An attempt was made to correlate contact between Ehrlich ascites cells growing in stationary culture, with the distribution of colloidal iron hydroxide particles adsorbed to their surfaces after fixation. It was observed that significantly fewer particles were adsorbed to regions of surfaces at which microvilli from other cells were “aimed”, than in adjacent regions. Although the precise relationship of this alignment to cell contact is problematical, the fact that alignment occurs at all is indicative of interactions taking place between regions of cell surfaces, and the modification of these surfaces as a result of the interactions.
