โฆ Synopsis
Adsorption isotherms and heats of adsorption of oxygen, carbon oxide, nitrogen oxide, water, n-butane, butene-1 and isoprene have been studied on the surface of freshly cleft graphite. It is shown that the carbon oxides partly inhibit oxidation. Low-temperature adsorption of oxygen on the graphite fresh surface has been studied.. It is also shown that the temperature boundary of physical and chemical adsorntion of oxveen lies within -73ยฐC and -43ยฐC. The nroducts of thermal decomnosition of surface oxides formed bithe interaction of 0, with the graphite fresh surface were analyzed:The interaction of the fresh surface with non-saturated hydrocarbons is accompanied by the break-up of a double bond in the molecule and by the formation of a free radical. It has been ascertained by a study of ESR spectra and by magnetochemical measurements that the major quantity of active centers on the graphite fresh surface are not free radicals. Possible change in the carbon peripheral atom valency in the course of crushing of graphite is discussed. YU. A. ZARIFYANZ, V. F. KISELEV, N. N. LEZHNEV and 0. V. NIKITINA
