โœฆ Synopsis

This paper investigates the interaction of a fluorescence probe, 4ะˆ-N, N-dimethylamino-3-hydroxyflavone (DMAHF), possessing intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) behavior, with DNA. The fluorescence spectra, fluorescence anisotropy, and effect of experimental parameters on ICT emission have been studied. In the phosphate buffer of pH 7.0, the fluorescence from ICT was almost completely quenched. It enhanced dramaticaly in the presence of DNA. The enhancement effect is thought to involve in (1) the immersion of the DMAHF molecules in the hydrophobic region of the DNA double helix where the solvation was inhibited effectively and (2) the restraint of the nonradiative twisted ICT state with viscosity. The analytical potential for determining DNA using the enhancement of ICT fluorescence has been examined.

## Abstract Only a small proportion of old specimens contain DNA that can be amplified by PCR. Therefore, rapid screening methods are crucial to identify the large fraction of samples that are so badly preserved that there is no need to attempt DNA extraction. In particular, the extent of racemizat
