## Dedicated to Prof. Andre¬ M. Braun on occasion of his 60th birthday The reaction of the ground and excited states of lumichrome ( 7,8-dimethylalloxazine 7,8-dimethylbenzo[g]pteridine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione) with aliphatic and aromatic amines was investigated in MeOH. In the presence of aliphatic amin

✦ Synopsis
While CW interacts with aromatic amines such as dimethylaniline in the ground state, C,,, does not. Fluorescence spectroscopic studies, including lifetime measurements, show the formation of exciplexes of both Ca and Cm with arpmatic amines in nonaromatic solvents such as methylcyclohexane. Exciplexes are however not formed in benzene solvent, due to K--X interaction between benzene and the fidlerene. Based on spectroscopic absorption measurements, it is shown that both C, and CT0 do indeed interact with benzene in the ground state.
