A free-energy analysis provides a new and comprehensive insight into the physical origin of capillary interaction between particles trapped at fluid interfaces. We begin by setting out the exact expressions for the interfacial and gravitational energies associated with the presence at an interface of a cylinder and of a doublet of two horizontal cylinders. We deduce the interaction energy, which is computed numerically for small and large Bond numbers, and we discuss the physical origin of interparticle attraction. (1993 Academic Press, Inc.
