✦ Synopsis
The set Intensive Early Intervention and Beyond: A School-Based Inclusion Program: Breaking the Barriers III, developed to describe the Groden/Millville Inclusion Model, includes a 22 minute video-tape as well as a 17 page supporting guide. The video portion is essentially a documentary describing the Groden/ Millville Model of inclusion educational programs for children with autistic disorder and developmental disabilities. Speci®cally, this program provides a review of the application of applied behavioral analysis (ABA) within a school-based system. The video documents the development of these ABA educational techniques with partnership from the school district. An accompanying video guide provides supplemental information regarding the background of the Groden/Millville Model and explanation of the Model's nine components of intervention.
The video reviews the rationale behind early intervention services and reviews the nine principles of the Groden/Millville Model. The principles include applied behavioral analysis, early academics, self-control and stress management, communication, independent living skills, interaction with peers, resource therapists, team meetings, and family support' (Groden, Spratt, Fiske, & Weisberg, 1999, p. 1). As indicated, this video is a documentary of an application of the model'. The model is based upon Direct Instruction techniques with references to Lovaas (1981), and Maurice, Green, & Luce (1996). These techniques involve one-to-one instruction using repetitive trials focused on learning a single basic concept (i.e., look at me', point to circle', etc). The video provides an overview of how these teaching techniques may be integrated within the classroom setting. It includes a review of the combination of these techniques with treatment components such as stress management, independent living skills, and positive peer interactions, and it highlights the Groden/Millville model as a progressive educational program.
The video guide provides further information related to the importance of the model components, refers to research supporting the use of these techniques, and the implementation of this model for both early intervention as well as elementary intervention. Speci®cally, this model is based upon developmental components highlighted by Ramey and Ramey (1998). Ramey and Ramey (1998) identi®ed six principles for early intervention programs, including `developmental timing, program intensity, direct provision of learning experiences, program breadth and ¯exibility, individual
