✦ Synopsis
The electric quadrupole transitions of metal ions in crystals are examined theoretically. The tensor operators and symmetryadaptation techniques are used to derive an expression for transition intensity for systems of arbitrary point symmetry. The case of cubic crystals is analyzed in detail giving results which can be easily subjected to experimental verification.
