In order to understand more fully some recent lower-bound computations For Gaussian expansions of the H-atom ground state, a study of the local energy for these wavefunctions has been made. It is found that the "local kinetic energy " TV/U (T = kinetic energy operator; cp = wavefunction) is quite oo

โฆ Synopsis
The ground state exxxgies of Hg were calculated for the internuclear separations R = 2.0, 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 au. The integral transform gaussian functions k&r) were used as atomic orbitals. The results surpass corresponding results obtained with scaled 1s functions. The equilibrium internucIear separation was found to be at R = 1.97 au, with a total energy -0.5896 au.

The two-center spherical limits for the energies, (a?>, (r2), equilibrium distances and vibration frequencies are obtained for the ground state of H$. It is found, inter alia, that a linear combination oE two floating spherical functions approximates the exact ground state energy to within 0.7%.
It is shown thnt the superposition of wavefunctions centered on the nuclei and floating wavefunctions represents the distribution of the electronic chnrge more accuratel\-than anv of these two functions sepnrs.:.l~. The mean-squnre values of electronic coordinates are calculated.
