## Abstract In this paper, the Ritz variational method is proposed to analyze the characteristics of the higher order TM modes for pentagonal waveguides. A series of functions are used as basis function to satisfy the boundary condition of the pentagonal waveguide metal wall. Then the scalar Helmho
