✦ Synopsis


Absorption of oxygen from air to water is studied for a stratified flow. Instantaneous concentration profiles in the liquid, close to the interface, are measured by utilizing oxygen quenching of the fluorescence from pyrenebutyric acid. When waves are present very large temporal variations of the concentration profile and of the mass transfer rate are observed. These results seem to rule out the notion that turbulence in the liquid is controlling mass transfer.
