β¦ Synopsis
We show that a rectilinear superconducting line vortex lying in a current with non-zero component along its axis is unstable to small helical perturbations. The study of exact and numerical solutions for the nonlinear evolution of such perturbations leads us to make some conjectures about the growth of the instability. These results are then used to demonstrate that curvature (or line tension) may not be neglected even for a vortex line which is initially nearly straight.
