The paper discusses the role of inspection of pipes in order to improve the process of operating them. General assumptions of the CCTV technique, as well as the way of carrying out inspection with its use, have been characterized. Particular attention has been paid to the problem of coUecting information gained during inspection and the analysis of such information, including use of software in the so-called office stations. A criterion for optimizing the rate of inspection has been presented, such that inspections are performed with adequate frequency to ensure reliable operation, while at the same time maintaining acceptable costs of inspect!ion. By example of the town of Wroctuw, current advances in the inspection of pipes in sewerage networks in Poland have been described.
