✦ Synopsis

This work focusses on efforts made to clarify links between acidic fuel components and insoluble sediment production during oxidative ageing of middle distillate diesel fuel. Acids present in fuels or produced during accelerated ageing do not appear to be limiting reagents for reactions leading to insolubles in the fuels used in this work. The effect on insolubles production when excess organic base was added to fuels before stressing was investigated.

The possibility of using the rate of change in fuel acidity before and after accelerated ageing in conjunction with insolubles formation after ageing is suggested as a fuel procurement specification for long term storage.
