Insights into Internal and External Organizing
A recent article by Wayne Horman, Research and Education Director of the Oil, Chemical, Atomic Workers (OCAW) union provides valuable insights into a union's internal and external organizing strategies.
The union successfully solved the problem of several weak bargaining units where less than 50 percent of the employees chose to join the union. An aggressive internal organizing strategy enabled the union to build and strengthen these units to the point where more than 95 percent of unit members are now counted on the union's rolls.
